RTX 3060 vs RTX 4060: which mid-range GPU should you buy for 1080p & 1440p gaming?

Both cards are the most-searched GPUs in the "Recommended" spec column across our PC game database. Here's how they actually compare — grounded in the Recommended requirements listed on our game pages, not synthetic benchmark folklore.

TL;DR

The RTX 4060 is ~15–20% faster at 1080p, draws 55W less power, and unlocks DLSS 3 Frame Generation. The RTX 3060 12 GB still hits Recommended specs for almost every modern PC game and is far cheaper on the used market. If you already own a 3060, don't upgrade for the 4060 alone — save for a 4070-class card.

1080p gaming performance

At 1080p — the resolution both cards were designed for — the RTX 4060 pulls ahead by roughly 15–20% in raw rasterization and considerably more once DLSS 3 Frame Generation is enabled in supported titles. Typical High-preset averages we see match the Recommended specs on our shooter, open world and action pages:

  • Cyberpunk 2077 — 3060: ~55 FPS · 4060: ~68 FPS (High, no RT). With DLSS 3 on the 4060: ~110 FPS.
  • Call of Duty Black Ops 6 — 3060: ~95 FPS · 4060: ~115 FPS (High).
  • Hogwarts Legacy — 3060: ~60 FPS · 4060: ~72 FPS (High, DLSS Quality).
  • Elden Ring — Both cards hit the 60 FPS engine cap at Maximum settings.
  • Starfield — 3060: ~48 FPS · 4060: ~58 FPS (High).

1440p gaming performance

Neither card is a native 1440p powerhouse, but with DLSS Quality both are perfectly usable. The 4060's 8 GB VRAM becomes the bottleneck before its GPU does — a real-world downside in heavy texture titles.

  • 1440p Ultra native: 3060 averages ~40 FPS in modern AAA titles, 4060 averages ~48 FPS.
  • 1440p + DLSS Quality: both clear 60 FPS in most 2024–2026 releases; the 4060 hits 80–100 FPS.
  • VRAM trap: at 1440p Ultra the 4060's 8 GB caps out in The Last of Us Part I and Hogwarts Legacy, forcing you to drop textures — a fight the 12 GB 3060 wins.

Does either card hit "Recommended" specs?

Across the ~500 PC games in our database, the most common Recommended GPU tier is an RTX 2060 / RTX 3060 / RX 6600 XT class card. That means:

  • RTX 3060 12 GB: meets or exceeds Recommended for ≥90% of modern PC games at 1080p High.
  • RTX 4060 8 GB: meets Recommended everywhere at 1080p and — with DLSS — most games at 1440p.
  • For 4K, neither card is enough — you want at minimum an RTX 4070 Super or RX 7800 XT.

Power draw & thermals

The RTX 4060's 115 W TGP is one of its biggest wins. It runs cool on dual-fan designs, works in an SFF build, and needs only a quality 450 W PSU. The RTX 3060 pulls 170 W and needs a 550 W supply — a meaningful gap for pre-built PC upgraders.

DLSS 3 Frame Generation — the real differentiator

DLSS 3 Frame Generation is exclusive to RTX 40-series cards. In supported titles (Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty, Alan Wake 2, Star Wars Outlaws, Black Myth Wukong, Monster Hunter Wilds) the RTX 4060 can nearly double perceived frame rates. The RTX 3060 is limited to DLSS 2 Super Resolution — still excellent, but purely an upscaler.

The verdict

Buy the RTX 4060 if…

  • You're building new and want DLSS 3.
  • You play mostly at 1080p.
  • You have a small case or a 450 W PSU.
  • Power efficiency matters to you.

Stick with (or buy used) an RTX 3060 12 GB if…

  • You want the most VRAM per dollar.
  • You already own one — the 4060 upgrade isn't worth it.
  • You occasionally play modded games or 1440p texture-heavy titles.
  • You want to save cash for a bigger CPU or SSD upgrade.
